Dabur seeks to provide healthier workplace for women


New Delhi,
 March 7, 2017: This International Women’s Day, the world’s largest Ayurvedic healthcare company Dabur India Ltd has taken up the cause of health and safety for its women employees. As part of its efforts to create a healthier workplace, Dabur will be hosting special ‘Yoga @ the Workstation’ classes for its women employees to help them reduce work-related stress and inspire them towards a better work-life balance along with insights on nutrition.

In addition, the women employees at Dabur would also undergo a special training on proactive safety and security for self. “Dabur is dedicated to the Health & Well-Being of Every Household and no household is complete without the woman of the house. Today, women’s participation is imperative to any company’s growth, as employees, as consumers and as stakeholders. This initiative is aimed at empowering our women staff in dealing with various aspects of life with greater confidence,” Dabur India Ltd Executive Director-HR Mr. V Krishnan said.

Dabur has been consciously working towards enhancing gender diversity at the workplace. Hiring of women in Dabur has been growing at a CAGR of 10% over the past 3 years. Around 33% of the young talent hired from campuses this year in the Sales & Marketing functions has been women, and this trend will continue in the years to come. In Corporate Finance, Marketing and R&D, almost 20% of the employees are women. Being a large Health Care company, Dabur has also put in place a separate structure of Product Specialists who interact with Medical Practitioners and 12% of the workforce therein, are women. In the Parlour Channel, almost 60% of the frontline sales staff are women. “Keeping this in mind, we are celebrating International Women’s Day at Dabur and trying to tell our women employees about how special they are and their importance in Dabur’s growth story,” Mr. Krishnan added.

The company has also put in place several policies towards encouraging women and enhancing workforce diversity, including initiatives on work-life flexibility focused on women. Given the fact that a growing number of young employees are working couples, Dabur today offers paid Maternity Leave of four months, which is a month more than the statutory requirement. It also offers paternity leave of up to two weeks for male employees. “We also have extended flexi-timing for new mothers. These steps have helped Dabur become more gender sensitive and make our women employees feel more secure,” he said.

In addition, Dabur has also rolled out a host of CSR initiatives aimed at empowering women, particularly in rural India. In the remotest areas of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Dabur runs Vocational Training Centres, where women are offered vocational courses and encouraged to start their own enterprises and become financially independent. The company today runs 16 Nari Shakti Kendras, in addition to 9 Adult Literacy Centres. The company has also helped 3 villages – one in Baddi (Himachal Pradesh) and two in Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) – achieve Open Defecation Free status with the construction of household toilets.

SPORTECH ’17, IIT Delhi’s annual sports festival 


7 Mar 2017, IIT Delhi, Hauz Khas, New Delhi : IIT Delhi hosted it’s very own sports extravaganza from 24 to 27th February and it was way more than a collection of tournaments! This year, it was not just about sports but about the deeper aspect of well-being and enjoyment that sports activities unfurl. Sportech this year was the proud host of 45 colleges, 160 teams, 1500 participants and many more memories.

Sportech this year managed in hosting four matches of the T20 World Cup 2017 for the Blind in collaboration with the World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC). The spectator turnout was truly spectacular. The very idea of promoting sports for the ‘differently abled’ and increasing the social sensitivity and acceptance for the same cause was heartwarming.

Other major attractions of Sportech 2017 ranged from a trip to the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, with people trying rock climbing, wall climbing and bridge crossing to Match Screenings of nail biting matches like the Australian Open Final between Federer and Nadal, EFL Cup Final, etc. The Sports Quiz hosted by Quiz Master Suresh Menon was another success story in itself! Sportech also provided exposure to newer sports in IITD like Kho Kho, handball, Baseball, Rugby among others.

Sportech 2017 was seen to promote a number of unconventional sports. The exhibition match for Rugby was played by the Indian National Rugby Team against Delhi Rebels club and the CRPF team. Other prominent informal events were Kite Flying, Cyclothon, Run in the Dark, Blind Chess tournament and many more on this seemingly endless list! The Zumba Session and cricket for security guards saw good participation and were greatly applauded. The Online Campaign regarding the impact of sports on the mental health also aimed towards creating a deeper social impact.

The formal events ranging from Athletics to Basketball to Squash saw enthusiastic participation from all the teams. The hard work, the effort and the sleepless nights put in to organise this fest was truly evident by the outcome of Sportech 2017.

According to Ishan Tyagi, General Secretary, Board for Sports Activities, “I am satisfied today because me and many of my colleagues joined IIT Delhi not only because of academics but also because of sports facilities which we lacked in our schools. To hold tournaments on such platform only adds to the dream we held earlier.”

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi today released a commemorative postage stamp on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India. Speaking on the occasion, at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, the Prime Minister appreciated Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, and said that the path shown by him is not about Mukti, but about ‘Antaryatra.’
He said that though Swami Paramahansa Yogananda left the shores of India to spread his message, he always remained connected with India.

Arsenic contamination a cause of concern

Union Minister of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Sushri Uma Bharti has underlined the need to make people aware about the negative impact of Arsenic in Ganga basin area. Addressing a workshop on Arsenic problem in ground water and its remediation in Ganga Basin organized by Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) in New Delhi today the Minister said that her Ministry will prepare an exhaustive work plan to meet the challenges posed by presence of arsenic in ground water on the basis of the outcome of this workshop. Sushri Bharti said there is an urgent need to start a nationwide movement to make people aware about the arsenic problem. She said everyone right from an individual to government including social organizations and NGOs have to join hand to make this movement a success.

The Minister said tapping alternate safe aquifers, for supply of arsenic free groundwater has been explored in many areas on a local scale; however, this approach would require extensive studies and analysis for mapping of groundwater availability, freshwater reserves and to examine mobilization of arsenic in the aquifer, both on spatial and temporal scale, due to forcing perturbation. She said “Under the National Aquifer mapping programme (NAQUIM) of CGWB special attention has been given to this aspect and water wells have been constructed tapping arsenic free aquifers using state of the art technology in parts of Ballia and Ghazipur districts of Uttar Pradesh”. Sushri Bharti said the present state of affairs of the growing arsenic occurrences demands a systematic translation of success stories of one place/region to another and formulating a comprehensive plan to mitigate the arsenic problem through a wider consultation process.

Union Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Dr Sanjeev Kumar Baliyan in his address said high value of arsenic in groundwater is geogenic in nature, but as a large population is dependent on groundwater resources for drinking purposes in Ganga basin and is under the risk of health hazards, it becomes emergent to go for mitigation measures as well as alternate sources of water so that locals can be protected from negative impact of arsenic in groundwater. He said awareness of public on water quality especially about poisonous arsenic contamination need to be done and making available alternate source of water with efforts of central and state governments as well as organizations and NGOs working in the field of groundwater.

The day long workshop was attended by about 300 experts including eminent scientists from all over the country. 23 selected papers have been included in the workshop volume out of which seven were presented in the workshop apart from a panel discussion among the eminent subject experts.

Arsenic in ground water is a geogenic contaminant i.e. caused by natural geologic processes. Arsenic-containing groundwater in Ganga River basin is hosted by the sediments deposited by the rivers during the late Quaternary or Holocene age (<12 thousand years). Incidence of high arsenic in groundwater reported from various parts of the country, particularly in the Ganga- plains is a serious threat to the health of human being. Over the last three decades numerous measures have been initiated which includes alternate arrangement for supply of arsenic free water to the affected populace and providing arsenic removal plants. Arsenic occurrences in ground water in these areas is highly sporadic in nature and all the sources in these areas are not necessarily contaminated.

Technological options to combat arsenic menace, in groundwater, to ensure supply of arsenic free water, in the affected areas can be in-situ remediation of arsenic from aquifer system, ex-situ remediation of arsenic from tapped groundwater by arsenic removal technologies, use of surface water source as an alternative to the contaminated groundwater source, tapping alternate safe aquifers for supply of arsenic free groundwater or combination of above techniques.

Out of the above options, arsenic removal technologies and ex-situ treatment technique are being practiced widely to provide potable water to the people in the arsenic affected areas after treatment of contaminated groundwater. Their large scale use in West Bengal, based on different operating principles, with various degrees of success and failure, has been reported.

The cost of a polluted environment: 1.7 million child deaths a year, says WHO


6 MARCH 2017 | GENEVA – More than 1 in 4 deaths of children under 5 years of age are attributable to unhealthy environments. Every year, environmental risks – such as indoor and outdoor air pollution, second-hand smoke, unsafe water, lack of sanitation, and inadequate hygiene – take the lives of 1.7 million children under 5 years, say two new WHO reports.

The first report, Inheriting a Sustainable World: Atlas on Children’s Health and the Environment reveals that a large portion of the most common causes of death among children aged 1 month to 5 years – diarrhoea, malaria and pneumonia – are preventable by interventions known to reduce environmental risks, such as access to safe water and clean cooking fuels.

“A polluted environment is a deadly one – particularly for young children,” says Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General. “Their developing organs and immune systems, and smaller bodies and airways, make them especially vulnerable to dirty air and water.”

Harmful exposures can start in the mother’s womb and increase the risk of premature birth. Additionally, when infants and pre-schoolers are exposed to indoor and outdoor air pollution and second-hand smoke they have an increased risk of pneumonia in childhood, and a lifelong increased risk of chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma. Exposure to air pollution may also increase their lifelong risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer.


Top 5 causes of death in children under 5 years linked to the environment

A companion report, Don’t pollute my future! The impact of the environment on children’s health, provides a comprehensive overview of the environment’s impact on children’s health, illustrating the scale of the challenge. Every year:

  • 570 000 children under 5 years die from respiratory infections, such as pneumonia, attributable to indoor and outdoor air pollution, and second-hand smoke.
  • 361 000 children under 5 years die due to diarrhoea, as a result of poor access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.
  • 270 000 children die during their first month of life from conditions, including prematurity, which could be prevented through access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene in health facilities as well as reducing air pollution.
  • 200 000 deaths of children under 5 years from malaria could be prevented through environmental actions, such as reducing breeding sites of mosquitoes or covering drinking-water storage.
  • 200 000 children under 5 years die from unintentional injuries attributable to the environment, such as poisoning, falls, and drowning.


Ongoing and emerging environmental threats to children’s health

“A polluted environment results in a heavy toll on the health of our children,” says Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director, Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health. “Investing in the removal of environmental risks to health, such as improving water quality or using cleaner fuels, will result in massive health benefits.”

For example, emerging environmental hazards, such as electronic and electrical waste (such as old mobile phones) that is improperly recycled, expose children to toxins which can lead to reduced intelligence, attention deficits, lung damage, and cancer. The generation of electronic and electrical waste is forecasted to increase by 19% between 2014 and 2018, to 50 million metric tonnes by 2018.

With climate change, temperatures and levels of carbon dioxide are rising, favouring pollen growth which is associated with increased rates of asthma in children. Worldwide, 11–14% of children aged 5 years and older currently report asthma symptoms and an estimated 44% of these are related to environmental exposures. Air pollution, second-hand tobacco smoke, and indoor mould and dampness make asthma more severe in children.

In households without access to basic services, such as safe water and sanitation, or that are smoky due to the use of unclean fuels, such as coal or dung for cooking and heating, children are at an increased risk of diarrhoea and pneumonia.

Children are also exposed to harmful chemicals through food, water, air and products around them. Chemicals, such as fluoride, lead and mercury pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, and others in manufactured goods, eventually find their way into the food chain. And, while leaded petrol has been phased out almost entirely in all countries, lead is still widespread in paints, affecting brain development.

Making all places safe for children

Reducing air pollution inside and outside households, improving safe water and sanitation and improving hygiene (including in health facilities where women give birth), protecting pregnant women from second-hand tobacco smoke, and building safer environments, can prevent children’s deaths and diseases.

For example, multiple government sectors can work together to improve the following:

  • Housing: Ensure clean fuel for heating and cooking, no mould or pests, and remove unsafe building materials and lead paint.
  • Schools: Provide safe sanitation and hygiene, free of noise, pollution, and promote good nutrition.
  • Health facilities: Ensure safe water, sanitation and hygiene, and reliable electricity.
  • Urban planning: Create more green spaces, safe walking and cycling paths.
  • Transport: Reduce emissions and increase public transport.
  • Agriculture: Reduce the use of hazardous pesticides and no child labour.
  • Industry: Manage hazardous waste and reduce the use of harmful chemicals.
  • Health sector: Monitor health outcomes and educate about environmental health effects and prevention.

Under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) countries are working on a set of targets to guide interventions for children’s environmental health, as well as to end preventable deaths of newborns and children under five by 2030. In addition to SDG 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all, other SDGs work to improve water, sanitation and hygiene, transition to clean energy to reduce air pollution, and reverse climate change – all of which will have an impact on children’s health.

President presents visitor’s awards for ‘Best University’, ‘Research’ and ‘Innovation’


The President presented the Visitor’s Award for the ‘Best University’ to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The Visitor’s Award for ‘Innovation’ was presented to Dr. Deepak Pant, Department of Environmental Science, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Central University of Himachal Pradesh for development of a reactor for direct conversion of waste plastic to LPG in small scale. The Visitor’s Award for ‘Research’ was jointly received by Dr. Shyam Sunder, Department of Medicine, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University for his work in the area of diagnosis and treatment of Indian Kala-azar and Prof. Niranjan Karak, Department of Chemical Sciences, Tezpur University for development of renewable resource based bio-degradable hyper-branched polymer nano-composites as self-cleaning, self-healing and bio-compatible smart sustainable futuristic material.

For selecting the winners, online applications were invited from all Central Universities for each category. A Selection Committee headed by Smt. Omita Paul, Secretary to the President and comprising Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, Chairman, UGC; Executive Vice-Chairperson, National Innovation Foundation and DG, CSIR screened the applications and selected the winners of the Awards.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said areas for research activity should align with the developmental challenges of our nation. The best minds in our universities should apply themselves to work out solutions in areas like sanitation, urban transportation, sewage disposal, clean river systems, healthcare and drought-resistant farming. They should also convert new knowledge into innovative products that are directly beneficial to the common population. Innovative minds should create tools and implements that alleviate the drudgery of farmers, workers, artisans and weavers. The number one barometer for successful outcome of research and innovation should be its beneficial applicability to a wider section of the population.

The President said the honours recognize the single-minded devotion and painstaking work in the pursuit of excellence of the winners. JNU has been adjudged the best university for its unrelenting pursuit of academic excellence. It has shown outstanding performance in all key parameters like quality of students and faculty, training of faculty, citations, publications, research projects, foreign collaborations, seminars and innovation exhibitions. Destination North East 2017: Exploring Tourism Potential of North East India

On the inaugural day of the Destination North East 2017 in Chandigarh today, in one of the technical session on Exploring Tourism Potential of North East India, Adviser (Banking, Industry and Tourism), North Eastern Council, Shri Gautam Chintey, said that air connectivity within the North Eastern states has improved now. He said that there are 7 entry points to North Eastern states and security and connectivity wise, NER states are safe and convenient.v Dhian Chand of PHD Chamber said that there is a requirement of tourism packages for north eastern states in order to promote tourism in NER. He further said that tourism has great potential for generating income and opportunities in the North East India. There is also a requirement of Tourism Development Policy in respect of North East by the Government, he added. Shri Dhian Chand said that more emphasis should be there on the development of tourism infrastructure. He said that there is need for Special Task Force for developing tourism industry in NER as there are huge investment opportunities in NER such as Adventure Tourism, Wildlife Tourism and Religious and Cultural Tourism.

Shri Manmohan Singh Kohli, representing the hotel industry, said that there is a requirement of developing more air connectivity to North Eastern Region (NER) in order to reduce travel time.

NDMC to launch large scale skill development drive

New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), currently engaged in transforming NDMC area into a smart city with global benchmarks, has embarked on a large scale skill development drive for enhancing employment opportunities and increasing productivity as mandated under Smart City Mission Guidelines.

(NDMCSCL), a Special Purpose Vehicle formed for executing the smart city plan, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in this regard in the presence of Minister of Urban Development Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu and Minister of State(Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy here today.

The MoU was signed by Ms.Juhi Kumar, CEO of NDMCSCL and Shri Manish Kumar, Managing Director and CEO of NSDC. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Venkaiah Naidu said that smart city development focusses on employment generation and every smart city needs to have at least one skill development centre. Skill training and development is essential for realizing full potential of the country’s human resources, he said.

Shri Rudy said that under the MoU, for the first time a large number of gardeners will be imparted skill training. Under the MoU, NSDC will assist in setting up Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras for imparting skill training and skill upgradation in different crafts as per stipulated quality certification norms.  To start with,  PMKKs will be set up at N.P Boys Secondary School, Mandir Marg,   School of Gardening, Purana Quila Road for gardeners,  Craft Centre, near Navyug Secondary School, Pandara Road for sector specific training and Dental Complex, Palika Health Centre, Chanakyapuri for training in Dental Assistant job roles.

NDMC has begun on first of this month identifying skill level gaps  (Recognition of Prior Learning) of 10,000 employees of NDMC and the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi,  engaged in various job roles like masonry, gardening, safai karmacharis, electricians and security services etc., for improving their skill levels. NDMC is also developing a high quality Skill Developing Centre at Moti Bagh in New Delhi where courses in next generation skills like 3D Printing, Automation, Internet of Things, IT/ITES and Robotics will be started.  This ‘Centre of Excellence’ to be established soon will be equipped with laboratories having simulated environment for all job roles related to health care sector. This will serve as ‘international Migration Skill Training Centre’.

NDMC and NSDC will also jointly develop e-learning content for skilling in smart cities. NSDC will assist in developing a Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for impact evaluation of all these skill training and upgradation efforts of NDMC. To begin with skill upgradation needs of CPWD, DDA and National Capital Region will be addressed to, said Shri Naresh Kumar, Chairman of NDMC.

Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi, Member of Lok Sabha, Shri Rajiv Gauba, Secretary(UD), besides senior officials of both the Ministries, NDMC and NSDC were present on the occasion of signing of MoU.

Pune: 6th March: Bajaj Auto has donated Rs one crore to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF) as well as an amount of Rs 31 lakh towards Pune-based Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC). A cheque for AFFDF was recently handed over to Honourable Shri Manohar Parrikar, Defence Minister, Government of India in New Delhi by Shri C P Tripathi, Advisor (CSR), Bajaj Auto, in the presence of the officials of AFFDF.

Limiting proportions to 1:2 & lowering centre of gravity of any building should be mandatory


Ghaziabad: Col Tyagi, through the medium of slides, explained in details that by controlling water cement ratio, by giving a slant in the roof, by providing a RCC Shear Wall in the tall Buildings, by ensuring that beams are lighter than columns stability can be achieved in any Building. He further said that by limiting the size proportions to 1:2, by using the breathing surface finishes, by using more insulators than conductors-harmony can be achieved in any Building. All these aspects have a solid science and engineering basis which are well covered in the ancient text of  VAASTU in Mayamattam, Samrangan Sutradhar, Mansara etc. However, you need an engineer to comprehend the ancient text. Unfortunately, the commercial pseudo Vaastu Consultants are swindling the people’s money in the name of “ Vaastu Upchar” without understanding even  a bit of the engineering aspect of construction as covered in the ancient text of Vaastu Shastra.

Giving an example, Col Tyagi  brought out that newly constructed  multi-storey buildings collapsed while the ancient temples remained intact during the BHUJ Earthquake. One of the reason is lower center of Gravity of Temple as compared to the vertical cubicals of Multistorey Buildings. We can provide relative stability to any building by simply giving a slant/slope in its roof.

Covering the aspect of harmony in any building, Col Tyagi suggested to adopt the Divine Ratio. In fact, nature exist in a spiral form. Everything which God has made contains an inbuilt spiral in it. The ratio of this spiral is called DIVINE RATIO. It can be achieved by selecting a square or rectangular shape. The Chairman of the Institution of Engineers and Pro Vice Chancellor of Mewar University Dr Hari Shankar Sharma congratulated Col T.P. Tyagi for clearing a big confusion created by the mushrooming of Vaastu Consultants. The Secretary of the Institution Shri Satish Chand Gupta proposed to organize a big SEMINAR on the issue so that people, at large could be saved from being  cheated by pseudo Vaastu Specialist. The proposal was okayed unanimously and it was decided there and then that a National Seminar on Vaastu Science for Promoters will be organized in JUNE 2017 with the AIM of recommending a group of Individuals to the Government of India to draft mandatory Guide lines for the Vaastu Consultants.
