Ghaziabad based environmentalist Akash Vashishtha has raised the issue of giving permission by the Forest Department for cutting down of an old banyan tree in the heart of the city after he claims to have learnt about such permission. He has written to the DFO stating that the tree at Jagdish Nagar along Hapur Road, ought to have been protected as a heritage tree, but rather, has been permitted to be felled (and later on to be translocated).

Vashishtha states in his letter that “the question is, how can such a tree be allowed in the first place to be felled or transplanted; whether due procedures were followed, including your own inspection, reports of the beat and sector incharges of the Forest Department.”

He has urged the DFO to immediately cancel the permission, to cut or translocate the banyan tree.

Forest Department officials could not be contacted till the time this report was written.
