Although Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam (GNN) on directions of Municipal Commissioner is conducting sporadic drives in the city against polythene carry bags, it is not having the desired effect on street vendors selling fruits & vegetables it seems.
One of the areas where polythene carry bags are being used rampantly is Vasundhara Sector 16, where street vendors and hawkers are back in fray, packing fruits and vegetable sin polythene carry bags with no fear of action from the GNN.
In fact, the NGT in an order previously and directed the GNN to clear the drain at Sector 16 that has been encroached upon by illegal shopowners as well as vendors after which the GNN had cleaned the drain on the NGT’s orders also warning the vendors not to choke the drain; however these vendors who are mostly scattered in Sector 16 and Sector 17 Vasundhara have no respect for the law and no fear of the GNN, it appears. Residents of the area point out that these vendors who are not Vasundhara residents put up their Thelas anywhere and sell vegetables, fruits and other areas at high rates. They also misbehave with the residents, they alleged.
The Vasundhara Zone officials of the GNN have taken little action against these vendors despite knowing well that they litter the place and are using polythene indiscriminately. These vendors do not follow Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 which makes them duty-bound to keep separate bins for disposal of their organic or biodegradable waste. The Rules also bind them not to litter the roads or pavements.
However despite all this the police and the GNN have so far not taken any concrete action to remove these vendors who are polluting the drain and wantonly using polythene carry bags despite a ban on them.
