Plasma therapy (off label use) has begun in Yashoda Super Specialty Hospital, Kaushambi to treat seriously ill corona patients, said a spokesperson of the hospital, who added that although ICMR had not formally considered it as standard care of treatment, but lives of some serious patients had been saved by the use of the therapy.

The plasma therapy technique is age-old. At the time of Spanish Flu in 20th century the use of plasma therapy had save many lives. Under this, plasma from the blood of recuperated patients is isolated and given to serious patients who recover from the anti-bodies in the plasma.

The off label term is coined by the Union Ministry, as this therapy although having shown positive results, has not been proven as yet. For making use of this therapy a hospital’s blood bank needs to have plasma apheresis machine as well as license and requisite permission to use that, which Yashoda Hospital has, said the spokesperson.
