Environmentalist Akash Vashishtha has alleged that almost all green belts developed by Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) in 2017, especially those in Raj Nagar colony are on brink of extinction due to lack of maintenance. He has written to the GDA VC to immediately take action against the encroachers and to restore the green belts.

Vashishtha rued that surprisingly, some of these green belts were now being used as trading junctions for storing and selling building material, further contributing to the dust and air pollution in Ghaziabad.

According to him, the condition of these green belts has deteriorated over a period of years despite the GDA having spent a huge corpus on the restoration and revival.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) previously on Vashishtha’s petition, in an order dating back to September 5, 2016 had directed the UP Chief Secretary to oversee that no green belt is encroached upon by unauthorised person or activity, whether it was being maintained by the GDA, Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam, UPSIDC or any other government body. However, despite such an order green belts continue to be encroached upon in Ghaziabad randomly and rampantly.
