An STF team of Crime Branch arrested four members of inter-state cheats of ‘Irani Gang’ involved and wanted in several cases of cheating and robbery in Delhi-NCR. The arrested persons are namely Sadiq Kambar Jafari; Kasim Beg; Khaibar Ali; and, Salim Ali.
The modus operandi of the gang was to pose as cops and to gain trust of victims before decamping with their valuables or robbing them. The police formed a dedicated team consisting of Inspector Digvijay Singh, SI Rajeev Bamal, SI Ashok Kumar, ASI Vir Singh, ASI Kuldeep, ASI Vijay Hudda, ASI Tehzib Haider, ASI Vijay Kumar and constable Sonu. The team analyzed the CCTV footage and identified them as ‘Irani Gang’.
The police came close on the heels of gang after receiving a tip-off about the movement of the gang near Okhla Mandi. Acting upon the information, the team successfully apprehended the four gang members of the Irani gang. On interrogating them, all the four accused persons confessed their crime. About 220 gms of gold ornaments were recovered from their possession. The recovered gold ornaments were found to be linked with 8 cases registered in Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad.
During interrogation, they disclosed that gang used to operate as a team. “Two members impersonating as cops would look to target senior citizens. They would ask him or her to take off their jewellery on the pretext that it is part of police checking. They would then pack the jewellery in a paper packet and instead of returning the real jewellery, they would hand over fake jewellery in a similar packet to the victim. During the same time, another gang member will come pretending to be a passer-by and will hand over his belongings to the impersonator so as to gain the confidence of the victim. Another gang member who will be stationed some meters away will keep a watch and another gang member would wait with a car or bike to flee away with the booty.
