In a decision that could have far reaching consequences the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Committee has suggested a penalty of Rs 50 lakh on Palam Vihar RWA. The issue pertains to installation of 10 rainwater harvesting systems in the colony that were found to be dysfunctional when an inspection was conducted by the NGT committee. Due to this lakhs of litres of rain water was wasted. The Committee found that large-scale encroachments over a green belt alongside the drain passing through the colony have been done by residents. The C & D waste was also found to be strewn across.
However, the RWA members have denied the allegations of the Committee reportedly. As per them the tenure of the RWA had expired in March 31 hence they were not responsible for the upkeep.
The next date of hearing is August 20.
