NGT directs CPCB to shut down polluting industries in 3 months across India

In a landmark judgment the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to shut down polluting industries across the country in 3 months in severely polluted areas of the country. The NGT also said that economic development cannot be allowed at the cost of public health.

In a joint study by the CPCB and state polluting boards in 2009-10 industrial areas were categorized into polluted industrial areas and further sub-categorised into critically polluted areas and severely polluted areas.

The bench headed by Chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel also directed the CPCB in coordination with the states to come up with compensation plan for restoring and damaging public health for the last 5 years. The NGT also made it clear that non-polluting industries will not be affected by this order. The matter will be further listed for Nov 5.
