IIT Roorkee recently organized the Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon 2019, Software Edition and hosted the event between March 2-3, 2019. There were 48 nodal centres all over India and IIT Roorkee was chosen as one of them.
Smart India Hackathon 2019 is a nationwide initiative to provide students a platform to solve some of pressing problems we face in our daily lives, and thus inculcate a culture of product innovation and a mindset of problem solving. This is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
There were seven challenging and complex problem statements related to Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Machine Learning (ML) to be solved by 28 teams comprising over 196 students from different parts of the country for development of software based industrial solutions.
About 12 judges from industry and academia evaluated the students in three rounds. Each team had 8 members including two mentors. The competition was evaluated in two phases. The problem statement from KG Info Systems Pvt Ltd at nodal centre IIT Roorkee was coded for solution. The competition went on for continuous 36 hours.
Amit Kumar Sinha, IPS, Director, Information Technology Development Agency, Government of Uttarakhand was the chief guest of Smart India Hackathon 2019. While as other dignitaries like Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee, R. Shrinivasan, Vice President, KG Infosystems Pvt. Ltd., Shripad Agavekar, AICTE Representative, Prof. Manoranjan Parida, Dean SRIC, IIT Roorkee, Prof. Balasubramanian Raman, Head Institute Computer Center and Single Point of Contact (SPOC), IIT Roorkee were also present.
Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Human Resources Development announced the start of the Smart India Hackathon 2019 on March 2, through Video Conferencing. A live interaction session with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi also took place later in the day where he said: “To all the youngsters who are taking forward the New India Smart India initiative, a big thank to you all. Since the start of this initiative in 2017, Smart India Hackathon has emerged as the largest open innovation model where on one single platform large number of educational institutions, industrialists, government agencies, professionals and students are working together. Started from just 30,000 students, this hackathon now has over 2 lakh entries. Today I can say that our goals are correct and that we are headed in the correct direction.”
“We are happy that this event is happening at IIT Roorkee. Each nodal centre is like a Kumbh of software enthusiasts, with a large number of students participating from all over the country,” said Prof. Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee. He added “Our team has rolled out an impressive organization of the event to enable the participating teams to give their best. I am sure visiting students will want to visit IIT Roorkee in future as well.”

The last edition of the hackathon saw over 5 million+ students from various engineering colleges complete for the top prize at 35+ locations. This time in the Hackathon, the students also had the opportunity to work on challenges faced within private sector organizations and create world class solutions for some of the top companies in the world, thus helping the private sector hire the best minds from across the nation.
