One wanted criminal namely Firoz Ahmad alias Sablu carrying a reward of Rs 12,000 was arrested by a joint team of Swat Alpha and Dhanghata Police Station of Sant Kabir Nagar, led by Inspector Pradeep Kumar Singh and Santosh Tiwari. The accused was apprehended from near a police outpost at village Baswari. A case had been filed against the accused previously at Dhanghata Police Station, disclosed SP Akash Tomar.
A huge quantity of spirit, around 600 litres (3 drums), was seized from the accused. The accused is a history-sheeter with at least 12 criminal cases against his name mostly at Kaptanganj Police Station (Basti) and other police station jurisdictions. Notably, a team of Dhanghata Police Station had busted an illicit liquor mafia ring on September 23 and had recovered a substantial amount of spirit (1,760 litres) and on September 27 (6,220) litres of spirit was seized again from village Badgo. Thereafter, the police was keeping a watchful eye on remaining accused and to recover the remaining cache of illicit liquor if any.
Firoz told the police that after his accomplice was arrested by the police he had been absconding and had on Oct. 3 come from Gorakhpur when he was nabbed. He revealed that he together with the other accused used to buy the spirit from Rampur, Moradabad, Bahraich and Gonda and would further add ammonium chloride to increase its strength. Later on they sold this illicitly blended liquor to several parts of Bihar, Kushinagar, Deoria, Maharajganj, Gorakhpur and other parts of eastern UP. The accused told the police that this spirit had high levels of alcohol. This spirit was bought by the accused at Rs 10-12,000 per drum and they sold it off locally for Rs 25-30,000 per drum and in Bihar at Rs 30,000 per drum.
He also added that about 1.5 months back a cache of this spirit had come by 2 DCMs out of which some was sold off while some was seized while 3 drums of spirit that was adulterated was hidden by him inside a lake at village Badgo- that was recovered later on.
