Haryana Power Distribution companies (UHBVN and DHBVN) would install 10 lakh smart meters in the state through Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between Haryana Power Distribution Utilities and EESL here today in this regard.
Giving details an official spokesperson said that in the first phase old meters of five districts namely Panipat, Karnal, Panchkula, Faridabad and Gurugram would be replaced with smart meters by EESL. He said that with a view to resolve the problems of meter reading and to bring reforms in the billing system, the new GPRS equipped meters would be installed in place of old meters.
Being connected to the control rooms through GPRS system, it would also fasten the process of resolving consumer complaints. Moreover, the meter reading would also be downloaded to the system and thus would prevent the wrong billing problems. These smart meters also provide the prepaid facility of electricity which would help the consumers to analyse their consumption. In addition, the consumers having smart meters would also be able to avail the benefits of peak load control facility. These smart meters would be installed at the expense of the Nigams.
He said that with an aim to bring reforms in the power sector, Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi started UDAY Yojna under which all the consumers having consumption more than 200 units would have to get the smart meters installed in their premises. Similarly, directions have been given by Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission to install smart meters under National Tariff Policy-2016.
