District Magistrate, Ritu Maheshwari in a meeting held on March 13, again asked the officials to ensure that all construction and building material used in different private and public activities in the region should be covered in accordance with the law so as to prevent the air quality from deteriorating due to road dust. For this she directed all concerned officials to penalize such firms that are violating the environmental provisions and further asked them to inspect areas falling under their jurisdiction from time to time, to keep an eye on construction related activities.
Maheshwari also gave directions to halt operation of those industrial units with immediate effect, that are found to be polluting the atmosphere. Regional Officer, Pollution Control apprised that about 300 construction sites have been inspected by the department, out of which 56 were found to be engaged in construction activity without environmental clearance. He said that Rs 1.15 crore has been levied as penalty on such people. He pointed out that regular checks were being done to find out if any polluting industry is functioning in residential areas. In the past two months 50 industrial units that have been asked to shut down and 1,000 unregistered units have also shut shop.
The DM asked that tree plantation drive should be carried out in the district and penalty imposed upon polluting vehicles. Municipal Commissioner, CP Singh, ADM (Admin), Gyanendra Singh, SP Traffic and GDA officials were present in the meeting.
