The Lok Sabha passed the bill relating to instant ‘triple talaq’ yesterday called The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, amid protests by Congress, AIMIM and other parties.
The BJP hailed the bill as historic. In the bill provisions are made for imprisonment for more than three years and fine for any Muslim man who gives triple talaq.
The opposition parties asked the Govt. why it was in a hurry to enact the legislation without proper consultation among stakeholders. To this Law Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that as triple talaq was still being practiced the Govt. had to bring this law.
