Union Cabinet cleared the National Medical Commission bill that will lead to creation of a 25 member commission headed by Union Cabinet Secretary, set to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI). The creation of NMC was necessitated after reports of widespread irregularities and corruption in the functioning of MCI whose chairman had also been put under arrest for corrupt practices a few years back.
Under the NMC medical colleges will just need one-time permission for setting up and recognition with no annual renewal requirement. They can also increase the number of seats up to the present cap of 250 and can start PG courses. Colleges found to be in violation of rules would be heavily fined.
