Even after the recent instances where the salaries of top officials of Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam (GNN) were stopped on DM’s directions, the GNN officers do not think it really is necessary to answer RTI queries. Notably, the GNN is an organisation that has been at the forefront of many alleged scams involving favouritism and bypassing of rules in the allotment of civil contracts. From time to time the issue of transparency has been raised by the councillors of GNN and by the citizens, but to no avail. The GNN has not been able to reply to RTI seeking details of land parcels given on lease in Ghaziabad. Besides, the GNN is also accused of being dysfunctional when it comes to building and repairing roads, ensuring adequate water supply and streetlighting.
One of the main factors is the general inertia surrounding the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam. It is a known fact that there is a high degree of absenteeism and babus can be seen coming to the office late—that severely affects the output. It is a common refrain of the officers that they are working from their Camp Office (residence) and is a good excuse for not coming to their Navyug Market office. However, with the new administration taking shape, the residents hope that all these malpractices on the part of officials and babus will be laid to rest soon.
